Watching the degradation of our media...

Lisa celebrates at RuminateThis , but it's not over yet:
IT'S ON TO THE FULL SENATE...

What next?

Well, it's now out of Committee and on to the full Senate, where it is expected that lawmakers on both sides of the aisle will vote to pass the bill. Then, the real battle begins...

The House of Representatives, elected every two years is not nearly as discerning as their Senate couterparts. They have to worry about funding those very expensive re-election campaigns, and tend to be more accomodating to the whims of special interests - the same interests that foot the bill for those campaigns. Yes, in this case, we're talking about the same interests that convinced the FCC they needed to control the American airwaves and print.

It won't be easy, but what in politics ever is? Who would have thought we'd come this far? If we fight in the House as we fought in the Senate, we'll overcome even the most daunting obstacles - like Reps. Tom Delay (R-TX) and Billy Tauzin (R-LA). It's clear these men are in the pocket of Big Media.

Look for additional legislation to pop its head in the coming weeks - legislation that will look to fine-tune the FCC's responsibilities. After being put through the wringer on this one, Congress will be aiming to make sure future Michael Powells are unable to systematically roll over lawmakers in an effort to accomodate their corporate clients: Big Media.
